Course Description: This
course is designed to enhance the knowledge of healthcare professionals who provide
clinical care to children and adolescents with sickle cell disease.
Objectives: Upon completion of the workshop,
the participants will be able to:
1. Identify the different types of sickle cell disease.
2. Recognize the pathophysiology of sickling and the sequelae
associated with the disease.
3. Differentiate between acute and chronic complications associated
with sickle cell disease.
4. Identify the current standards of care for patients with sickle
cell disease.
5. Discuss new treatments on the horizon for sickle cell disease.
6. Identify psychological issues that impact patients with sickle
cell disease and their families.
7. Recognize the impact of sickle cell disease on patients at
different developmental stages in their life.
8. Explain the differences between adaptive and maladaptive coping
behaviors.
9. Recognize the signs of depression.
10. Identify and facilitate collaboration with community resources for
patients with sickle cell disease.

Accreditation and Credit for Nurses: Provider
approved by the California Board of Registered Nurses, ID# CEP 12094 for 3.5 contact
hours.
Registration Fee: $10 per person if received by
May 22, 2003. Late registration (after May 22nd) is $25 per person.
