Camp
Crescent Moon
A Summer Camp for Children
with Sickle Cell Disease
Each
year nearly 100 children from Southern & Central California
attend the nation’s first week long summer camp of its kind
“Camp Crescent Moon”, a specialized summer camp for children

with sickle cell disease. Since 1967, the Sickle Cell Disease
Foundation of California has provided an outdoor camping
program for children with sickle cell disease, who because of
serious medical complications would not be able to attend
traditional camps. Camp Crescent Moon allows campers to
participate in a creative outdoor experience and provides
growth and development for each camper.
Programs and Activities
The daily activities at Camp Crescent Moon are the same as those
found at any other camp program, however they are tailored to meet
the physical needs of children with sickle cell disease.
Daily programs include:
Arts ‘n Crafts, Nature Hikes, African Dance, Swimming,
Art Therapy, Music Video Production,
Computers and “Designer Genes” – an educational program about sickle cell disease..
Volunteers
Camp Crescent Moon is staffed by a team of volunteers who participate in
a comprehensive training process to ensure their readiness and
commitment to the demands the camp week will present. The camp
consists of four separate components, which includes an administrative
staff, medical staff, program staff and cabin counselors. Each of
these four components leads to the success of the program.
Physicians, nurses and social workers provide the medical and
psychosocial care of the children while they attend Camp Crescent Moon.
As a result of the commitment, expertise and consistency of our
volunteers, we have been able to carryout a successful camp experience
for thousands of children with sickle cell disease for more than 40
years.
The 42nd Annual Session of Camp Crescent Moon is scheduled for July
18-25, 2009.
