Until July 7, 2017, there was just one FDA-approved drug, hydroxyurea, developed 20 years ago. Today Bone Marrow (stem cell) transplants have successfully cured some individuals with sickle cell disease, this therapy is not an option for all people with sickle cell disease.
Researchers are looking at gene therapy as a potential cure and other treatments that can hopefully lessen the painful episodes of sickle cell disease.
